W Stirland are pleased to have completed the construction of the Chichester Garage sites, and handed the development over to Hyde Housing.
This project involved the clearance of five areas of dilapidated garage blocks within Chichester city centre area and their replacement with small developments of houses, flats and bungalows for occupation by housing association tenants.
All buildings are of traditional masonry construction under tiled roofs, and have been built to “Secure by Design” safety standards. Private gardens were provided for each of the houses and bungalows, with further hard and soft landscaping to the common grounds and permeable block paving to provide sustainable ground water drainage.
These small ‘infill’ sites presented special challenges to the team. All sites were in densely populated residential areas and early engagement with our neighbours was essential for us to manage access constraints, delivery timings, parking control, noise and dust during the construction period. Our dedicated Site Manager and Customer Care Manager were also critical in maintaining good relations with local residents. Other challenges were presented by the physical access to the sites, (with one site being accessible by nothing larger than a transit van), and at the development in Exton Road, the relocation of a pre-existing electricity sub-station and all related cabling.
