July saw the completion and handover of the newly refurbished Science and Maths (SAM) Block of Oathall Community College.
Originally constructed in 1974 under the SCoLA school-building programme, the SAM block was, by modern standards, uncomfortable to work in, expensive to maintain and heat, and suffered from layout and accessibility issues.
The rebuilding programme included significant asbestos removal, the installation of thermal insulation, new windows and doors, external cladding and entrance layout modifications. Internally, new heating, lighting and fire safety systems have been installed and room layouts have been amended to provide proper circulation/transit areas and full accessibility. The rebuild provided 9 new science labs, 2 prep rooms, 7 general classrooms, 1 ICT room, new student toilet facilities and office/staff rooms.
This project completed in mid July 2018 providing a well-designed, visually appealing environment to inspire and facilitate both learning and teaching.
