Work has commenced on this scheme of 37 affordable housing units on the site of a former car park in the centre of Crawley town. The development provides 5 x two-storey houses, (3 x two-bed and 2 x three-bed), and a part two-storey, three-storey, and four-storey block of 32 flats, (13 x one-bed and 19 x two-bed).
This centrally located site occupies an area of transition between the urban town centre and the suburban residential outskirts. Design details such as projecting header bricks and deep overhangs to the eaves of the houses reflect the New Town character of the surrounding areas, whilst careful management of mature trees on the site and attention to the scale and orientation of flats will respect the special nature of the Dyers’ Almshouses conservation area immediately to the west. The increased mass and scale of the flats then links the site visually to the larger scale urban development in the town centre immediately to the south.
Site constraints have necessitated a relatively low-density development, but one that provides an exciting contemporary contribution to local housing needs and enhances and improves the existing neighbourhood.
Underway and due for completion in Autumn 2019.
